Fabrication and characterization of organically modified layered double hydroxide/poly (lactic acid) nanocomposite by sonication-assisted solution compounding method

•The LDHs nanofillers for PLA were successfully modified by intercalation-surface combined modification strategy.•Modified LDHs can alter the crystallinity of PLA/LDHs nanocomposites within the range of 10.1% to 47.3%.•The incorporation of organically modified LDHs simultaneously enhances the tensile strength and elongation of PLA composites.•The addition of LDHs modified through combined modification can enhance the elongation at break of PLA by up to 230%.
