•Pseudomonas sp. P26 achieved the highest DBT removal percentages.•DBT removal was correlated with bioemulsifying activity and biofilm formation.•Intracellular polyP accumulation did not significantly favor DBT bioremoval.•The presence of DBT differentially affected bacterial characteristics of interest.•Intracellular polyP content was related to DBT presence or a long stationary phase.
