•ZnO/4Mg1ZrOx mixed oxide was synthesized and applied in the dehydrogenative α-methylenation of alcohols with methanol to produce allylic alcohols.•Surface Lewis acid-basic pair was characterized and its key roles in allowing high catalytic selectivity to allylic alcohols were demonstrated.•Alcohol dehydrogenative α-methylenation with methanol was facilitated by the MPV-type selective hydrogen transfer process.
