•Coal tar pitch is used as a cost-effective precursor for N, S co-doped carbon.•A new blowing agent (NH4)2SO4 is used to produce porous carbon structure.•The obtained carbon structure features a porous and thin shell.•The carbon materials deliver high capacitance and long-term stability.
