Adaptive responses of geographically distinct strains of the benthic dinoflagellate, Prorocentrum lima (Dinophyceae), to varying light intensity and photoperiod

•P. lima showed different adaptive regulation mechanisms to high light intensity.•Fv/Fm and pigment content were consistently inhibited at high light intensity.•Increased light intensity enhanced DST production and growth.•Short photoperiod reduced toxin production content.•Short photoperiod under high light intensity showed modest recovery from light impairment.
