Impact of a warmer cold season on soil nitrogen and carbon cycling in High Arctic wet sedge tundra

•Winter soil warming in the Arctic does not appear to affect microbial communities linearly.•Cold soil temperatures had inhibited nitrification.•Soil inorganic nitrogen pool dominated by ammonium in High Arctic.•Nitrogen mineralization during winter soil temperatures did not have a linear relationship.
