Exploration of price variation, elemental profile, and fortification of commercial Indian edible salts with iodine, potassium, iron, magnesium, and calcium

•Different salt samples available in the market were estimated for their mineralogical composition.•Sodium (Na) was the major element found in all samples.•Recommended level of Iodine (I) fortification was found only in four salts (tata salt lite, tata salt and saffola salt plus, medicated salt).•Black salt contained the high level of iron (Fe) that contributes 15-20 % RDA.•Some of the highly priced salts do not justify their price in terms of fortification.
