摘要

•There is a lack of knowledge on which components contribute to lint genetic gain.•Twenty cotton cultivars developed in the last 65 years were grown during 2 years.•Improvements in yield, HI, and aboveground biomass over 65 years were recorded.•Correlations showed lint yield improvement is due to increased biomass and lint HI.•Path analysis showed that improving aboveground biomass could decreases yield.
