Trends of greening and browning in terrestrial vegetation in China from 2000 to 2020

•Developed vegetation persistent change index P-value to assess the vegetation change trend.•Investigated the changes in natural vegetation on both pixel and point scales over three vegetation types.•Natural vegetation is generally stable with a greening trend.•National key ecological programmes have achieved remarkable accomplishments in vegetation restoration.
