Family farming systems: An index-based approach to the drivers of agroecological principles in the southern Andes

•Based on 35 management practices we built an Index of Agroecological Principles.•The indexes for biological and cultural principles were positively correlated.•Gardener origin, homegarden age and farm size filter agroecological practices.•Results can guide strategies to foster agroecology and social-ecological resilience.
