•The combined addition of EA and SF can produce a self-prestressing UHPM.•Self-prestressing UHPM can reduce the corrosion rate up to 87.3%.•Self-prestressing UHPM also improves residual compressive strength significantly.•Oxides with the least relative volume are predominant in rust for the self-prestressing UHPM.
