•Active teaching methods are generally superior to the passive method.•Multi-criteria methods help the assessment of learning methodologies with less subjectivity.•Creativity is the least developed skill in the passive method.•Problem Based Learning is the method that develops the most skills compared to Think-Pair-Share (TPS), and Guided Reciprocal Peer Questioning (GRPQ) and passive method.•A hybrid curriculum that mixes active and passive methods can be beneficial for skill development.
