•Influences of urban and arable land expansions on tides vary with space.•Land cover impacts on tides were stronger in areas being intensively disturbed.•Overall annual mean tidal levels demonstrate a decreasing trend in dry periods.•Tidal level changes at locations close to the coastline were more related to sea level rise.
