•An early warning method for tunneling-induced ground surface settlement is developed.•Accident precursors of excessive ground settlement are used as early warning signals.•The degree of road damage caused by tunneling is used to classify the warning level.•A case study verifies that the method can effectively improve the safety of tunneling.
