•Cancer and pregnancy are prothrombotic states that increase risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE).•This was a retrospective study of a national cohort evaluating the impact of cancer on postpartum VTE risk.•Cancer in pregnancy increased the risk of VTE beyond the immediate postpartum period.•Further study is needed to identify optimal VTE prophylactic strategies for this population.
