Impact of a newly established expert clinical pharmacological advice programme based on therapeutic drug monitoring results in tailoring antimicrobial therapy hospital-wide in a tertiary university hospital: Findings after the first year of implementation

•Expert interpretation of therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) can make this tool more clinically useful.•Impact of a newly established TDM-guided expert clinical pharmacological advice (ECPA) programme is shown.•8484 ECPAs were performed for tailoring antimicrobial therapy in 2961 patients.•The percentage of optimised treatments increased relevantly after the first ECPA.•The very short median turnaround time was crucial in making the ECPA programme reliable and successful.
