•Non-optimal temperatures result in stress-related decreased growth rates.•Stress-related conditions result in increased starch and soluble sugars.•Lower temperatures are more stressful to L. minor compared to higher temperatures.•Lower phosphorous availability has no observable effect on starch/soluble sugars.•Light induced effects increased growth rates and also starch formation.
