•Targeted therapies in trauma are limited by laboratory delays and poor sensitivity of point-of-care devices.•Abilities of global fibrinolysis capacity and rotational thromboelastometry to detect fibrinolysis derangements and hypofibrinogenemia were compared.•Hyperfibrinolysis is predominant in severe trauma patients upon admission to hospital.•The global fibrinolysis capacity assay is more sensitive than rotational thromboelastometry in capturing hyperfibrinolysis and hypofibrinogenemia.
