•Oxidized phospholipids increase conductance and capacitance of lipid bilayers.•Breakdown voltage and lifetime of lipid bilayers do not change with oxidation.•Lipid oxidation can be measured by electrical properties of planar lipid bilayers.•Oxidation products were determined using mass spectrometry.
