Hydrogen production via a green environment-friendly route is critical for the health of human beings. Water splitting is a promising method for green hydrogen generation, where the molecular oxygen and hydrogen are produced at the anode and cathode electrode via oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively. Developing earth-abundant, highly efficient, and low-cost electrocatalysts for HER and OER is crucial for sustainable energy conversion, particularly in practical alkaline water electrolysis. We explored the electrochemical exfoliation method for the synthesis of few-layer β-Co(OH)2 nanostructures, which shows improved electrocatalytic OER activity. Further, we engineered the electrocatalytic HER activity of MoS2 in an alkaline electrolyte by making a heterostructure with Co(OH)2. The electrostatically coupled Co(OH)2/MoS2 (CoMo) heterostructure synergistically contributes to the improvement in electrocatalytic HER activity. The obtained results offer a solid foundation for the creation of developing economically viable, efficient, and stable electrode materials for electrocatalytic HER and OER.
