•First method to recognize the medicinal parts of herbs using hyperspectral technology.•Recognition of rhizome of red ginseng based on spectrum and image information.•Using image enhancement techniques to expand the number of samples.•Both PLS-DA and YOLOv5 played well in recognizing the different parts of red ginseng.•This work provided a theoretical basis for the intelligent recognition of herbs.
