•This work reports for the first time the expression of the cry10aa toxin in tomato plants.•This study presents the successful development of a GM tomato resistant to leafminer (Tuta absoluta).•ELISA revealed a higher accumulation of cry10aa protein.•The bioassay performed with T. absoluta showed a statistically significant difference between the emergence of adults for one line when compared to the wild type.•Data suggests a reduction of up to 50% in the emergence of adults for the line L10, which presented the highest toxin level in leaves.
