•Cough is an important symptom in the management of severe asthma.•Cough reflex hypersensitivity, airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) and airway inflammation are associated with cough in asthma.•Bronchial thermoplasty improved cough in patients with severe asthma by improving capsaicin cough sensitivity (C-CS).•Heightened C-CS may be a therapeutic target for cough in severe asthma, along with AHR and airway inflammation.
