Mapping the location of local and regional recurrences according to breast cancer surgery and radiation therapy: Results from EORTC 22922/10925

•The absolute gains of radiation therapy are associated with stage of disease and extent of surgery.•2/3 of local recurrences occur within the borders of the radiation fields.•The spatial location of the recurrences was related to the locoregional therapy applied (surgery, radiation).•The rate of local recurrence was lower by a factor of about 2.5 in the mastectomy group compared to breast conserving surgery.
