•Stratigraphy and geochemistry indicate contemporaneous deposition of the Duitschland and Rooihoogte formations.•This Stratigraphic revision weakens present arguments for an oscillatory oxygenation trajectory.•Rb-Sr isotope signatures are reset in the Transvaal Basin in relation to the Bushveld Intrusion.
