Adolescent swimming exercise following maternal valproic acid treatment improves cognition and reduces stress-related symptoms in offspring mice: Role of sex and brain cytokines

•VPA increased anxiety and anhedonia but decreased social behavior in offspring.•VPA sex-dependently altered behavioral despair and memory and brain cytokines.•Exercise prevented anxiety-and anhedonia-like behavior in VPA-treated offspring.•Exercise prevented behavioral despair, social, cognitive impairment in VPA males.•Exercise reduced inflammatory cytokines in a sex and brain region-dependent manner.
