•δ13C of substrate, biomass, and bacteriohopanetetrols was measured for 7 bacteria.•Anammox bacteria had large negative Δ13C from substrate to biomass and lipid.•Aerobic heterotrophic bacteria had small Δ13C from substrate to biomass and lipid.•A serine-cycle methantroph had a small Δ13C from substrate to biomass and lipid.•Marine and terrestrial anammox can be traced using bacteriohopanetetrol δ13C.
