•Millijoule-level dual-color MIR output was achieved in 3.05–4.85 μm range.•Independent tuning of dual-wavelength laser except a narrow tuning gap of ∼0.37 THz.•Detailed study of the gain competition and coherent coupling in a dual-crystals OPO system.
