•SMS fiber optic sensor was employed to monitor steel rebar corrosion.•Machine learning (ML) is used for automatic detection of steel rebar corrosion.•Twelve ML algorithms are tested and compared based on SMS fiber optic sensor data.•ExtraTrees shows the best performance for automatic corrosion detection of steel rebar.
