Muscular involvement in long-term type 1 diabetes: Does it represent an underestimated complication?

•This cross-sectional, real-life observational study assessed the prevalence of sarcopenia in a White population with long-term type 1 diabetes.•The effects of some clinical parameters on muscle mass and its function have been evaluated.•A high prevalence of low muscle mass was found in the sample, suggesting a possible pathogenetic role of type 1 diabetes duration on muscle trophism and function.•Limitations of the study included the lack of a control group and the small number of included participants.
