Historical DNA solves century-old mystery on sessility in freshwater gastropods

•We studied historical DNA of a 120-year-old syntype of the sessile snail Helicostoa sinensis.•We demonstrate the phylogenetic and trait-based originality of this endemic taxon.•We confirm the existence of sessility in freshwater gastropods.•We highlight the increasing risk of losing evolutionary innovations in invertebrates.
