•Ruthenium nanoparticles supported on gallium-modified molecular sieve applied for generating hydrogen from its hydride ammonia via its photothermal decomposition.•The thermal effect of light enhanced the efficiency of the reaction much more than heating.•Natural light in the photothermal synergistic catalysis is sustainable and economical.
