•The EHPMOS with enlarged pore size were successfully synthesized.•EHPMOS coated fiber exhibited superior extraction efficiency for PBBs.•A sensitive analytical method for PBBs was developed based on SPME and GC–MS.•The accurate determinations of PBBs in environmental water were achieved.
