•Planctomycetes membrane coat like protein architecture was strengthened.•Novel HSS domain at the C-ter of MCL, likely related to cytoskeleton interaction.•MCLs were detected in new bacterial phyla, still mostly in PVC bacteria.•First report of membrane coat-like proteins in Archaea, but few hits.•No MCLs were detected in the Asgard superphylum.
