•Four compliant walking models are evaluated for civil engineering applications.•Ready-to-use equations in Cartesian coordinates are derived for SLIP-based models.•Input parameter space is identified for models to generate stable periodic gait.•Effects of the roller foot and leg damping on walking forces are assessed.
