摘要
Objectives: Exercise intolerance and peripheral muscle dysfunction are important consequence of cystic fibrosis (CF) Systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, physical inactivity are responsible for decreased exercise capacity and impaired muscle function. A newly myokine called irisin seem to increased oxygen consumption and energy supply. This study was aimed to investigate the relationship between irisin serum concentration with exercise capacity and muscle function in children with CF. Methods: Twenty five CF children who had no pulmonary exacerbation during and at least 1 month ago was included the study. 6 minute walking test (6MWT) was used to assess exercise capacity. Peripheral muscle endurance was assessed with sit-ups, push-ups, and squat tests during 30 s. Children’s fasting blood samples were drawn to analyze for irisin by using the Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) method. Results: The mean 6MWT distance values were 551.44 ± 46.2 meters. Children had reached 84% of the expected 6 MWT distance. There was a significant correlation between 6MWT distance and serum irisin levels and number of sit-ups (r = 0.44, p = 0.02; r = 0.399, p = 0,04 respectively). Conclusion: This is the first study to evaluate serum irisin levels in CF patients. Increased irisin level was associated with better exercise capacity and muscle strength. Due to positive various physiological affects, increasing the concentration of irisin in the body circulation may be important. Exercise interventions should be added to CF treatments to provide benefical effects of irisin.
