•COVID-19 infection assessment in workplace infection prevention and control (IPC).•This prospective cohort study was conducted from December 2020 to December 2021.•Employees restricted from working when ill had significantly lower infection rates.•Workplaces should prioritize implementing this measure as a workplace IPC.
