Risk of air and surface contamination during application of different noninvasive respiratory support for patients with COVID-19

•We performed air and surface sampling in patients with COVID-19 on respiratory support.•Higher viral load on the day of sampling was associated with positive air samples.•High-flow nasal cannula and noninvasive ventilation are not riskier than nasal cannula.•Fixed items and linen items are prone to environmental contamination.
