•Serum NE content of septic rats was greatly decreased after treatment with DEX or Elaspol.•Renal tubular injury in rats was aggravated after cecal ligation and perforation.•Renal tubular injury was alleviated after DEX or Elaspol treatment.•Levels of inflammatory factors TNF-α and IL-6 increased with the prolongation of time.
