•Seismic-reflection imaging provides lithospheric structures of the West Qinling orogen.•The closure of Paleo-Tethys Mianlue ocean and its branch in the West Qinling orogen is revealed.•A tectonic model for the Triassic West Qinling orogeny is proposed.
