•Decision support tools may support decision making on pesticide reduction and adoption of agroecological practices.•We analyzed the structure, pest and cropping practices in 78 studies and 56 original models.•This review is a springboard for improved modeling of agroecological rice protection.•An innovative conceptual model for agroecological rice protection is proposed.
