•Deep learning algorithm establishment on histological slides in a multi-center study.•The algorithm highlights melanoma metastases on H&E stained tissue of SLN.•The method could accurately identify melanoma deposits of>0.1 mm in diameter.•Metastases detected with an AUC of 0.96 and 0.99 in two cohorts, respectively.
