Characterizing wind-structure interaction for performance-based wind design of tall buildings

•A mathematical model to characterize the interaction of wind-building is developed.•The building load model captures self-excited loads corresponding to 3 DOF response motions in along-wind, across-wind and torsional directions.•Interaction of post-elastic structural response and wind loads in extreme conditions has been characterized through looped structural analysis.•The method allows for establishment of performance-based design for wind-excited structures by capturing interaction parameters accurately.
