•Multi-directional (MD) and unidirectional (UD) basalt fiber architecture for adherends.•MD bolted joints had a higher damage rate but longer life than UD bolted joints.•MD bolted joints exhibited a higher energy dissipation than UD bolted joints.•MD bolted joints had a lower damage rate but shorter life than bonded joints.•Fatigue damage occurred in MD bolted joints at all load levels and life stages.•Fatigue, creep, and creep-fatigue interaction damage occurred in bonded joints.
