•Various heat recovery schemes for the CHPD system are designed to improve drying performance.•Sensitivity and comparative analyses of the CHPD system with various heat recovery schemes are conducted.•The best heat recovery scheme increasing the system's SMER by 0.93 kg/kWh is found.•Exergy analysis of the CHPD system with the optimal heat recovery scheme is conducted.
