The impact of global, regional, and national population ageing on disability-adjusted life years and deaths associated with diabetes during 1990–2019: A global decomposition analysis

•Population ageing accounted for 0.42 million diabetes-related deaths between 1990 and 2019.•Population ageing has outpaced population growth and changes in mortality since 2013.•Changes in the number of diabetes-related deaths and DALYs attributed to population ageing varied greatly across countries.•India and China suffered the largest number of diabetes-related deaths attributed to population ageing.
