The dynamic changes of monocytes and cytokines during wound healing post-burn injury

•BCA-1 is a novel cytokine in burn wound healing but has significant changes.•MCP-1 and IL-6 levels have a positive correlation with burn severity.•CD14+ CD16+ reaches higher levels during more severe burn injury and in hypertrophic scar patients, contributing to the pro-inflammatory response.•IL-8 antagonism may prove beneficial in curbing excessive inflammation leading to fibrotic scars.•IL-1RA appears to be an anti-inflammatory mediator after burn injury.
