•Hornification and replacement by ACW presents potential to be used as combined treatments.•Composites reinforced with hornificated pine pulp and ACW showed better SE and MOR values.•Composites with hornificated pine pulp and ACW improved durability of pulps after ageing.•Composites with LF have a similar energy performance than the one with activated coal waste.
