•The use of FA and MS results improve its sustainability and waste management.•The CS and the gel/space ratio (X) at 90-days OPC-FA-10% MS composite cement.•The lowest values of corrosion rates were observed in the case of C0MS20 mix.•C0MS20 mix in presence of 600 ppm spinach extract increased the inhibition efficiency of steel rebar.
