•XRD patterns of binders were used to study and model the hydration process of Calcium sulfo-aluminate (CSA) based composites.•Hydration of CSA-based composites is controlled by the quantity of ye’elimite, and C3A.•A chemical parameter (Mm Value) based on binder composition is proposed to predict the properties of CSA-based composites.•Compressive strength and setting time are influenced by the Mm Value of the composite binder.
